Calcium Channels

Voltage gated calcium channels are activated during depolarization of many different cell membranes and mediate calcium influx in response to action potential and subthreshold depolarization signals. Signal transduction of different cell types involves different voltage-gated calcium channel molecular subtypes. Four types of calcium channels (L, N, P/Q and T) have different physiological functions. L-type calcium channels are involved in the excitation-contraction coupling of muscle cells and the excitation-secretion coupling of endocrine cells and some neurons. N-type calcium channels are involved in the release of neurotransmitters. P/Q-type calcium channels are limited to repetitive peaks induced by Purkinje cell-mediated depolarization. T-type calcium channels mediate depolarization-induced repetitive peaks in endocrine cells and neurons.

Amazigh has its own L-type voltage-gated calcium channel (CaV1.2) stably expressed cell line for drug screening.
